Spirit of the Wild

The Gala Opening of The Glen Innes Art Gallery’s next exhibition is on Thursday 10th March at 6pm.(free entry, all welcome). “Spirit of the Wild” is an exhibition of sculpture and pastel drawings focusing on wild animals. Maggie Brockie from Stanthorpe and Helena South from Inverell have teamed up to present a show that everyone can enjoy. Maggie creates charming native animal sculptures out of clay that is later spray glazed. Several of her pieces are wall mounted. Helena’s masterly pastel drawings are of creatures native and otherwise, wild and not so wild, but equally charming. Both artists hold regular workshops. Maggie Brockie became a professional artist after a successful solo exhibition at Bungawarra Winery in 1998. She is basically self taught but has attended  workshops here and overseas including one in Italy in 2007. This will be her first exhibition with The Glen Innes Art Gallery. Helena South”s work will be well known to Glen Innes and Inverell art lovers as she has taken part in many exhibitions in both locations. For a number of years she attended the Glen Innes TAFE visual arts courses and honed her skills. She was a recent winner at the Glen Innes Show with one of her artworks. Head Glen Innes TAFE arts and ceramics teacher Max Powell, who taught both exhibiting artists, will be opening the exhibition. This exhibition runs from 14th march to 8th April (replaces Sam Austrin-Miner who had to withdraw due to work commitments). If you would like to meet Helena she will be at the gallery on Wednesday 16th, Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 31st March between 1 – 4pm and Friday 8th April 1 – 4pm.

Glen Innes Art Gallery open Monday to Friday 10 – 4pm, Saturday 9.30 – 12 noon. Phone 67302610. For more information on exhibitions and submissions phone John 67327073 or Janice 67325660.
